P-51D "Shangri-La"

Below are pictures of P-51D Mustang "Shangri-La."  Vintage Fighters acquired this P-51 Mustang in 1996 painted up in a fictitious "CheckMate" paint scheme.  After lots of sheet metal work and modification this aircraft was painted up in Don Gentile's 4th Fighter Group "Shangri-La" colors.  This version of the P-51D didn't see combat but rather was used as a war bond promotion.  Don Gentile flew this aircraft around the country promoting war bonds.
